Pursuant to Committee Rule 7, the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Committee on Ethics (Committee) determined to release the following statement:
On May 19, 2025, a criminal complaint was filed against Representative LaMonica McIver in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey for two counts of forcibly assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers from the Department of Homeland Security in arresting another individual, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 111(a)(1). On June 10, 2025, an indictment was filed on those charges, as well as an additional misdemeanor count under the same statute.
Pursuant to Committee Rule 18(e)(2) and House Rule XI, clause 3(b)(9), within 30 days of a Member being indicted or otherwise formally charged with criminal conduct, the Committee shall either establish an Investigative Subcommittee (ISC) or inform the House why it did not do so. On June 12, 2025, the Committee convened for the purpose of considering the criminal charges filed against Representative McIver. The Committee did not establish an ISC at this time because the full Committee determined to continue to review the matter pursuant to Committee Rule 18(a).
The Committee notes that the mere fact of an investigation into these allegations does not itself indicate that any violation has occurred. No other public comment will be made on this matter except in accordance with Committee rules.
